Finding somebody with whom you would like to start up a relationship is difficult, but making the relationship durable may be a lot more difficult. There are no conflict-free relationships. The way in which we handle these conflicts will be the determinants of our personalities. Some marriages will face harder challenges and this causes them to build up a closer relationship or it forces them to break up. Then there are the families that have large conflicts that occur because of children becoming teenagers. No matter what, conflict is unavoidable and we all have to deal with it sooner or later. Learning to solve conflict situations and working on the relationship using diverse methods is essential to save the relationship. Evolutionary psychologists examined "mate retention tactics" in American men and women and found out these strategies include being overly watchful and threatening violence. Men's and women's strategies applied to keep their marriages intact differ. According to the results of a survey carried out of 214 married people by researchers from the University of Texas, men use their social status and financial success as a strategy to keep their mate interested in them more often. Men also reported to keep their wives interested by making promises of changes and threatening sexual betrayal. Women were also more likely than men to take care of their physical appearance as a strategy to arouse interest. With regard to infidelity, it was found out that if a husband suspected that his wife was cheating on him, he would try to keep his wife from public activities, threaten punishment and criticize other men. Interestingly, women who suspected that their husbands were cheating did not work on the relationship any harder than those without suspicions. Unfortunately, some men's tactics involved some minor forms of physical abuse of wives, reported the authors. For instance, in an earlier survey, 72 percent of women requiring medical care reported that their husbands limited their contact with family and friends, insisted on knowing the ladies' whereabouts and insulted women.
